Ermita de la Virgen de la Pena, Mijas Village
(Mijas Cave Chapel)
This is a perfect and extremely intimate venue for a small wedding. There is seating for around 24 people in this tiny chapel within the rock and it is completely unique, providing a ceremony with a difference.
Hidden away in a small corner of the village looking over the valley and down to the coast is the hermitage of the Virgen de la Pena, which was built into a rocky outcrop by Mercedarian monks.
Inside is a likeness of the Virgen de la Pena, the patron saint of the village. According to legend she appeared on this spot on 2nd June 1586 to two young shepherds that had been led there by a pidgeon. Subsequently, a likeness of the saint was found concealed in a recess in the tower where it had been hidden for 500 years. In 1656 work began on the sanctuary, which, nowadays is always decorated with flowers and pictures as offerings.
You can be sure that your guests will NEVER have been to a wedding in a cave like this one before! This is what they call a wow-factor!
